It was a little jarring that the narrator for this audiobook is male versus the female voice for the first book, but eventually, I got it. Combined with more poignant stories of people finding a use for the cafe's very particular brand of time travel, and it this all makes for a charming book. And I appreciated this effort to build upon the lore and give us more on how things came to be. The book nicely builds on the lore established in the first book and not only shares new stories of people deciding to use the cafe to travel through time but also reveals more of the back story. But this means a few changes in terms of our cast of characters at the cafe and a few other circumstances. It has been a few years since the events of the first book, which you could argue may not matter for a cafe that allows for time travel.

Where do you get your inspiration from? I get it from all around me. It became a series of three books, starting with In a Treacherous Court. I discovered a bit of her story in a reference book I was reading and was captivated by her and inspired to write about her, a woman working in what was a man’s profession in those times, in a very tense and unfriendly court, for a very mercurial king. What inspired you to write your first book? My first book that was published was based on the real-life Renaissance character Susanna Horenbout, who most likely worked for Henry VIII as a court painter. I started writing fantasy and historical fiction, and dabbled with a bit of science fiction, but my first four published novels were all historicals. How long have you been writing? What genre do you write? Thanks for having me here! I’ve been writing since I was a child, but only started writing seriously about ten years ago. "The fantastic seeds skipping and hopping and flying about the woods and valleys brought with them an amazing adaptability," Eiseley writes. Unlike the static, towering green vegetation of the dinosaurs' world, this new plant life managed to encase its genetic imprint in suddenly mobile casings called angiosperm (or "encased seeds").īorne on the wind or attached to animal hides, the new plant life blanketed the world, and mutated its way into countless new settings. At the heart of the explosion was a new kind of flora. In his essay "How Flowers Changed the World," the American naturalist Loren Eiseley describes what he calls "a soundless, violent explosion" of seed-born plant life millions of years ago, just as the Age of Reptiles started to draw toward its own apparently violent close in the late Cretaceous Era.
